Guide for Authors

Journal of Hydraulic Structures (JHS) welcomes original contributions in different areas of hydraulics, hydraulic structures and water resources engineering (see the Aims and Scope section). The manuscripts should be submitted via the Journal’s Submission System. In what follows, the definitions and guidelines required to submit papers are presented. Authors must submit their original manuscripts online via the website: http://jhs.scu.ac.ir

All submitted papers are subject to a double-blind peer reviewing procedure. The manuscript should be written in good English. It should have been carefully checked for clarity, conciseness, correctness of grammar, and typographical errors.

Submission:

Submission to this journal proceeds totally online and you will be guided stepwise through the creation and uploading of your files. All correspondence, including notification of the Editor's decision and requests for revision, takes place by e-mail.

Manuscript format:

  1. It is important that the file be saved in the native format of the word processor (*.doc or *.docx).
  2. The file should include text (preferably in 11 points, “Times New Roman” font), Figures and Tables. Figures, Tables and other variants of representations should be placed within the text in the right position.
  3. The text should be in single-column and single-spacing format. Keep the layout of the text as simple as possible and a margin of at least 4 cm on one side.
  4. When preparing Tables, if you are using a table grid, use only one grid for each individual table and not a grid for each row. If no grid is used, use tabs, not spaces, to align columns.
  5. Please ensure that the embedded figures and tables are in an acceptable resolution. The clarity of the presentations is mandatory for accepted manuscripts.
  6. To avoid unnecessary errors, you are strongly advised to use the 'spell-check' and 'grammar-check' functions of your word processor.
  7. Please include page numbers.
  8. Headings:The manuscript should be divided into Introduction, Experimental procedure, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgments, References. The introduction and conclusions are compulsory. The headings should be numbered and can include sub-division with relevant numbers.
  9. Abstract and Keywords:Page 1 should include only paper title, abstract and keywords. Abstract is a concise summary of the entire paper and should briefly state the objective of the research, applied approaches/schemes, summary of results. Moreover, Abstract should be provided in one paragraph and be at most 250 words.
  10. Keywords: The list of 3 to 5 keywords should be provided at the end of the abstract.
  11. Tables:Tables should be numbered consecutively and should be cited within the text. A short descriptive caption above each table is essential.
  12. Figures:Figures should be numbered consecutively and should be cited throughout the text with a short descriptive caption below it.
  13. References:All publications cited in the text should be presented in a separate section at the end of the manuscript (and vice versa).

**From issue 1, 2026, the “Vancouver” format must be followed.

Text: Indicate references by number(s) in square brackets in line with the text. Example: '..... as demonstrated [1]'. Referring to actual authors is allowed, but the reference number(s) must always be given. Example: ' Ashrafi and Dariane [15] demonstrate that … '

List: Number the references in the list in the order in which they appear in the text. Please add the doi link to the end of the references.

Generative AI policies for journals

These policies have been introduced due to the growing use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies by content creators. They aim to offer clearer guidance and transparency for authors, reviewers, editors, readers, and contributors. Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz press will keep an eye on these developments and update the policies as needed.

For authors

Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in Scientific Writing

This policy refers only to the writing process and not to the use of AI tools for data analysis and insights during research. When authors use generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in writing, these tools should only enhance readability and language. Human oversight and control are essential, and authors must carefully review and edit the output, as AI can produce authoritative-sounding content that may be incorrect, incomplete, or biased. Authors are ultimately responsible for the content. Authors must disclose the use of AI and AI-assisted technologies in their manuscripts, and a statement will appear in the published work. This disclosure supports transparency and trust among authors, readers, reviewers, editors, and contributors, and ensures compliance with the relevant tool’s terms of use. Authors should not list AI and AI-assisted technologies as an author or co-author, nor cite AI as an author. Authorship entails responsibilities and tasks that only humans can perform. Each (co-)author is accountable for the accuracy and integrity of the work, must approve the final version, and agree to its submission. Authors are also responsible for ensuring the work is original, that the authors qualify for authorship, and that the work does not infringe on third-party rights. Authors should familiarize themselves with the Ethics in Publishing policy before submission.

Key Points

  • Use AI only to improve readability and language.
  • Human oversight and control are essential.
  • Authors are responsible for the content.
  • Disclose AI use in manuscripts.
  • Do not list AI as an author or co-author.
  • Authors must ensure the work is original and comply with the Ethics in Publishing policy.

Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Tools in Figures, Images, and Artwork

  • The use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools to create or alter images in submitted manuscripts is not allowed. This includes enhancing, obscuring, moving, removing, or adding features within an image. Adjustments to brightness, contrast, or color balance are acceptable as long as they do not obscure or remove any original information. Image forensics tools may be used to detect irregularities.
  • The only exception is if AI or AI-assisted tools are part of the research design or methods (e.g., AI-assisted imaging in biomedical research). Such use must be described in the methods section, including details on how the AI tools were used, the model or tool name, version, and manufacturer. Authors must follow the AI software’s usage policies and ensure proper content attribution. Authors may be asked to provide pre-AI-adjusted images or raw images for editorial review.
  • The use of generative AI for creating graphical abstracts is not permitted. For cover art, generative AI may be allowed with prior permission from the journal editor and publisher, provided all necessary rights are cleared and proper attribution is ensured.

Key Points

  • Generative AI or AI-assisted tools cannot be used to create or alter images in manuscripts.
  • Brightness, contrast, or color balance adjustments are allowed if they do not obscure original information.
  • AI use in research design or methods must be described in the methods section.
  • Proper content attribution and adherence to AI software policies are required.
  • Generative AI for cover art may be allowed with prior permission and proper rights clearance.
