Abstract
This study presents an inverse routing method based on the linear Muskingum model, utilizing a new and efficient optimization algorithm i.e., the weIghted meaN oF vectOrs (INFO) to determine optimal routing parameters. Additionally, the analyzed rivers are segmented into smaller intervals, then the linear Muskingum routing method is applied separately and consecutively to each interval. Furthermore, lateral flow contribution has been integrated into the calculation process to improve routing accuracy in the linear Muskingum method. It is worth noting that this study is novel in two key aspects: it is the first to apply a partitioning approach to an inverse flood routing strategy, and, more broadly, across all types of flood routing—whether inverse or direct—it marks the first instance in which the number of sub-reaches has been optimized within an inverse Muskingum flood routing framework, while simultaneously estimating routing parameters and accounting for lateral flow effects. The proposed Muskingum model is investigated on three flood events, and its performance is compared to existing methods reported in the literature. The sum of squared errors (SSQ) significantly decreases for each analyzed flood event, with best SSQ values of 167.03 for the triangular flood hydrograph, 371.55 for the Wilson data, and 128.63 for the double-peak hydrograph. Also, the Standardized Absolute Deviation (SAD) evaluation criteria, yielding best SAD values of 194.17, 70.03, and 45.83 for the respective events, along with the visual agreement of observed input hydrographs and the resulting routing hydrographs, highlight the advantages of the proposed method.
